well BFA 3 is over. I cleaned out my studio today.

i'm planning on moving to LA with my BFF, Isa, in about a month.

i'm applying to every job i can find. i have a job interview at disneyland next week. i'll pretty much take any job. although i cringed at the thought of applying to mcdonalds...im not THAT desperate yet.

this photo documents my first itch to be creative after calarts. so maybe im on my way back to normal, we'll see. it's block print that will be printed on postcards to announce the launch of helloimkate.com

maybe there's something there

i've been feeling hateful lately.
pretty much like i hate school and just want it to be over.

but then again thats exactly how i felt when i was a junior in high school.
premature senior-itis.

so i have a lot of iced coffee and st. johns wart.
and visit pasadena (christopher) & burbank (isabelle) as often as possible to make myself happier.

then today as i'm standing in the blow out room rinsing out my screen, it hits me.
that same excited, inspired feeling that i had before i got caught up in the calarts craziness.
i was standing there with ear plugs in my ears and a pressure washer in my hands realizing that i had coated & exposed my screen all by myself.
its the same way i felt the first time i finally got one good print in the photo lab at chaffey.

i thought i had lost the ability to feel those feelings.
so this screenprinting thing...maybe there's something there.

we went to an opening at fresh pressed on friday to see work by andy mueller (aka one of christopher's favorite artisits). christopher bought a "poster" which was just a piece of paper that he got to screenprint on himself. this alone made him excited then they said "hold on, we'll get the artist to help you"

so this is a picture of christopher screenprinting an andy mueller design with andy himself.

the calarts tshirt sale was last night.
by the time i got there they only had mens M & girls XL left of my design. sorry dad & christopher, no shirt for you.

i guess i should be excited that mine sold out.

the lows & the immediate highs of job hunting.

so i didnt get the internship and i was a little disappointed at first.
but then i called the art director & asked what i could fix for next time.
he just said my portfolio wasnt well rounded enough because i hadnt been in school long enough.
but he said he liked me & my work & and try again next summer.

so i feel better.

then i decided that i still needed a summer job so i looked on craigslist.
i found a florist & invitation designer that own a shop called celebrate.

long story short:
after being in the shop for 10 minutes i had the job.
so i will be designing invitations & floral arrangements this summer.
im actually pretty excited about!
i had a lot of fun designing molly's wedding invite so i'd like to get some more experience.

the funniest part of the "interview" was when the florist introduced me to the owner...

florist: "you have to meet this girl!!! she is so cute & then you get to know her and she is amazing!!! and she's a graphic designer!!!! she can totally help us out!!!!!!"

owner: great! when can you start?! by the way...whats your name?"

so yeah, i went from feeling bad to pretty great in a short amount of time.

my practicum classes are over today.

its called "graphic arts procedures" and its from 1951.

its safe to say i would not have been a graphic designer back then. way too much work!

we're supposed to be paying close attention to the negative space between the ornaments. if you look at them long enough you start to see other shapes come forward. pretty trippy!

so the cities of santa clarita/stevenson ranch/castaic etc...are ON FIRE!!!!
they have been since sunday.

this morning at 5am i woke up to sounds of helicoptors diving around our apartment complex. i turn on the tv and there is a new fire on san fernando road (where i live). i wake up the roommates, we all kind of freak out then go out back and see the hill behind our complex ablaze!

so with advice from erin ("FORGET THIS! we're outta here!") we pack up some stuff (they're animals, my computer) and we drive to erin's mentor's house.

we stayed there until about 8:30am when they stopped mentioning it on the news. when we got there, the whole hill was burnt but there was no damage to any stuctures.

we were all relieved and went back to sleep.

then erin woke me up at 12:30 saying there was ANOTHER fire in newhall. which is the tiny city we live in. so we go outside and watch planes and helecopters drop water just on the other side of the hill. so far they are saying that fire is about a mile away but its blowing in the opposite direction from us. so we're safe...for now.

its been an exciting few days!
school has been closed for two days.
we feel like we're in a war zone because of all the planes & helicopters flying over.

oh well.
gotta love southern california!

i decided to make a few flyers for the marching band that my roommate (erin) directs. she had already asked me to do it and its always great when one project meets two requirements.

BFA 2: year of the dog (& cat)

the new school year started yesterday.
im sitting in my new studio and i have class in 20 minutes.

these two days of class have already been interesting because rin has her dog, acorn.
he comes to class with us but he is so afraid that he wont walk.
so he either ends up getting carried or being dragged, belly down, around the halls.
its kind of funny to watch.

right before class started yesterday, a big dog came in our studio and pee'd in the middle of the room.
which triggered a territory marking spree where acorn felt he had to cover the same spot.
why do they allow dogs at school?


anyways, i'll update more when i have work to show.

when church sermons go in my ears & come out my hands.

my first year at calarts is over.
reviews went well and im excited to be a BFA2.

as you might guess from the title i am now crammed back into my old bedroom.
lets just say im used to way more space and a lot less people.
this summer was not planned out too well but we're making it work.

im trying to keep my creative mind sharp by reading design magazine and working in my sketchbook.

i'll have pictures of reviews once i find my camera's USB cable.
